Daviess County Bicentennial-Freedom Day AKA "Juneteenth"
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day, is a holiday or observance in many US states to celebrate the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. This new historical marker, honorably placed and dedicated at the Daviess County Courthouse lawn, recognizes slaves and free men of color from Daviess County, who enlisted with the Union Army and served in the Civil War. This marks a new chapter in Daviess County history. The Owensboro trolley will pick up at the courthouse at 6:45 for transportation to the Owensboro Museum of Science and History. After the marker dedication service, the Owensboro Museum of Science and History (122 East 2nd Street) will present the official opening of an African American exhibit, ?A Journey Shared: African Americans in Daviess County? featuring photos, artifacts, and information about Daviess County?s African American citizens. The ribbon cutting for the exhibit takes place at 7 pm. There will be a free reception featuring soul food beginning at 7:30, which is open to all. Following the reception, a special program by the Men?s Mass Community Choir, remarks by David Tandy, Louisville Metro Council and a short talk ?Tracing Your Family?s Roots? by Carl French will be presented.
