2016 Owenbsoro NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet
RAYMOND M. BURSE, President of Kentucky State University will be the keynote speaker at the 2016 Owensboro National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Freedom Fund banquet at Rogers Hall, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Owensboro, Kentucky.
The theme of this year's banquet, which will be held Saturday, 4 June at 6 pm., is Education . . . Breathing Life Into the Future. The event will focus on the importance of education and the positive influence educators have on future generations.
The NAACP believes it is vitally important that educators instruct our youth about their civic duties as adults. We all will benefit, by making a conscious effort to emphasize the importance of civic responsibility. The chapter will also salute African American educators and administrators from our local school systems and colleges. Additionally, the Travis Leon Jackson Scholarship and the Owensboro Career Development Scholarship, will be presented to local students.
Mr. Raymond M. Burse has a distinguished record of achievement in academics, athletics and community service.
As president of Kentucky State College from 1982 to 1989, Raymond M. Burse managed record enrollments, oversaw more than $60 million in capital improvements and led significant achievements in the academic and financial operations of the institution.
Mr. Burse later became an executive at General Electric Company from which he retired in 2012 after 17 years. He initially served as GE Appliance’s senior counsel and then served as a corporate officer, vice president and general counsel. Before joining GE, Mr. Burse was a partner in the law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs in Louisville and received his law degree in 1978 from Harvard Law School.
In addition to his academic excellence, Mr. Burse also excelled in sports and was named Centre College's Most Valuable Offensive Player in football.
Not only was he the founder and president of Centre’s Black Student Union, he also was a student adviser to the president. His cumulative achievements in academics, athletics and student leadership prompted his selection as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he studied organic chemistry.
Mr. Burse is also a recipient of the John W. Davis Award from the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Education Fund. He received honorary degrees awarded by Kentucky State University in 1989 and by Centre College in 2007 and is listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
Currently, he serves on the Board of Governors of the Center for Creative Leadership, a global organization dedicated to the development of leadership qualities needed to meet specific challenges and business realities.
A native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Mr. Burse is married to Kim Burse, who serves as vice president of administrative services for Goodwill Industries of Kentucky. They have three sons, Raymond Jr., Justin and Eric.
